POSEIDON
Lori D’Angelo
My father, Time, tried to kill me
by devouring me whole. But
Mother knew best, and she
saved my little brother Zeus,
feeding Father a stone instead.
When Zeus grew up, he tricked
Father with wine and saved us all.
He vomited us out and we fought.
When we overthrew our father,
a fate even Time could not stop,
then we split the world in three.
My brother Zeus ruled the sky.
My brother Hades got control
of the underworld, and I the sea.
BY THE BANKS OF THE RIVER SCAMANDER
A Villanelle
Skye Rozario Steinhagen
By the banks of the Scamander,
Troy and Ilia’s hate
Is recalled by the Scaean gates.
Slow reeds bend mute, the remainder
Of battles fought of late
By the banks of the Scamander,
Where felled trunks reaped their fates,
Spoken downstream to lighter land
Far from the Scaean gates.
These long years marked his waters with brands
Of arrows tips and breastplates.
By the banks of the Scamander
The old river-god creates
New graves of sea from sand.
Around the Scaean gates
The quelled plain charges no demand;
Biding, it sprouts and waits
By the banks of the Scamander
Beside the Scean Gates.
ART AN ODYSSEY by OLIVIA MANSFIELD
Olivia Mansfield’s multidisciplinary practice is rooted in classical painting, iconography, theology, historic culture, ritual and symbolism. Themes of myth, legend and folklore intertwine vividly in a playful balance of the abstract, botanical, celestial and figurative elements she encompasses. Her paintings will transport you to imaginary worlds both fantastical and tellurian, alluding to and echoing our existence. Wistful faces, wandering beasts, anointed altars, prophetic visions. Vessels, chambers, coracles, and crucibles all twist and jostle, swirling amongst the alluring, luscious, somewhat mercurial and volatile dwellings she creates.
